The Umbrella Academy season 4: Release date, plot, trailer latest news
Here's everything you need to know.
The wait is almost at an end: The Umbrella Academy season 4 arrives on our screens this week.
It's safe to say that fans are very excited about what lies in store in what has been confirmed as the final chapter for the hit Netflix sci-fi, especially after that major cliffhanger at the end of season 3. And the good news is that showrunner Steve Blackman recently teased to RadioTimes.com that he "went very big this season".
But Blackman also confessed there was a chance not everyone will be on board with the show's ending, explaining: "I think some will love, some will maybe hate and some will have opinions, but I want to hear their opinions."
That certainly makes us more intrigued to see what direction the finale takes us in – one thing that seems guaranteed is that it won't be boring.
Ahead of the launch, the official The Umbrella Academy account released a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing the cast and crew of the show emotionally reflecting on the series and including footage from the final shooting days.
"It's been a really extraordinary experience getting to play Viktor," Elliot Page says in the clip. "To have played this character has really been a true gift and a fantastic experience for me as an actor."
You can watch the 5-minute clip – which also includes input from Robert Sheehan, Tom Hopper, Justin J Min and various other stars – below and scroll on for everything you need to know about The Umbrella Academy season 4.
The Umbrella Academy season 4 release date
The Umbrella Academy season 4 will be released on Netflix on Thursday 8th August 2024.
The release date was confirmed by Netflix on the fifth anniversary of the show's first episode. Character posters show the Hargreeves siblings in their school uniforms and in their get-up as adults, as they prepare for one final adventure.
Netflix wrote alongside the posters, which confirmed the release date: "Hello: February 15, 2019, Goodbye: August 8, 2024 Happy 5 years to The Umbrella Academy. The final season is on its way."
Season 4 of The Umbrella Academy was confirmed in August 2022, with showrunner Blackman saying: "I’m so excited that the incredibly loyal fans of The Umbrella Academy will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings’ journey we began five years ago.
"But before we get to that conclusion, we’ve got an amazing story ahead for season 4, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minutes."
Production began in February 2023. Sharing the news, the Umbrella Academy Twitter account shared a group snap of the stars at a table read with a caption reading: "It’s all been leading to this. The final season of The Umbrella Academy is now in production!"
Filming wrapped in May 2023.
Who will star in The Umbrella Academy season 4?
The below stars are confirmed to return return to The Umbrella Academy season 4 as part of the cast:
- Elliot Page as Viktor Hargreeves/The White Violin/Number Seven
- Tom Hopper as Luther Hargreeves/Spaceboy/Number One
- David Castañeda as Diego Hargreeves/The Kraken/Number Two
- Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison Hargreeves/The Rumor/Number Three
- Robert Sheehan as Klaus Hargreeves/The Séance/Number Four
- Aidan Gallagher as Five Hargreeves/The Boy/Number Five
- Justin H Min as Ben Hargreeves/The Horror/Number Six and Ben Hargreeves/Sparrow Number Two
- Ritu Arya as Lila Pitts
- Colm Feore as Sir Reginald Hargreeves
The Hargreeves siblings will be back to fight another day in season 4! Of course, the season 3 finale left the fate of Alison (Raver-Lampman) uncertain, but considering she's confirmed to return and we've seen her in the first footage in a Netflix sizzle reel, we're assuming she makes a recovery.
The clip shows the Hargreeves siblings downing a shot, saying: "One last shot, for old time's sake."
The fates of Stanley (Javon Walton), Lila and Diego’s fake child, and Luther’s new wife Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez) remain unclear, so fans will have to wait for more information.
We've also got some new stars joining the fray. They are:
- Nick Offerman as Doctor Gene Thibedeau
- Megan Mullally as Doctor Jean Thibedeau
- David Cross as Sy Grossman
What is the plot of The Umbrella Academy season 4?
An official synopsis for the new series reads: "Six years after the reset, the powerless Hargreeves clan faces a secret society and learns that the greatest threat to the universe... may be themselves."
So, The Umbrella Academy season 4 will pick up with our heroes six years after we last saw them, in the dramatic season 3 finale. But, they're scattered away from each other and have lost their powers - so could we be seeing them more vulnerable than ever?
Before long, they're faced with a mysterious secret society and have to save the world once again! What could the secret society be, though? Something tells us it's got something to do with Offerman and Mullally's new characters.
We also know from the trailer that Ben is going to be more important than ever before, proving key to finding out more about the different timelines in the show.
The problem is, this is a different Ben to the one we know and love. When the Umbrella Academy met the Sparrow Academy at the end of season 3, they got lumbered with the Sparrow version of Ben - who's clearly a lot more selfish than The Umbrella Academy version of Ben. So, will he be willing to help?
Showrunner Steve Blackman previously teased that the stakes are going to be even higher than ever before.
"I think inevitably if we got a season 4, it’s going towards an endgame," Blackman told TheWrap. "I think at a certain point, I’m not sure where we’d go after season 4. We have to be careful."
He continued: "My plan for next year is not to continually tread on the same ground we have before. It’s a challenge to come up with a new way to subvert this storyline, and I think we have an idea how to do that. But I think if we got to season 4, it would be a great ending for the run of the show.

"I’m not saying I couldn’t do more, but you know, I think that would be very satisfying for the audience, four seasons."
Of course, season 3 ended on a major cliffhanger, so we're expecting the season to pick up after that.
We won't go into too many details here about what exactly happened – for that, you can check out our Umbrella Academy season 3 ending explained feature – but suffice to say that the gang managed to save the universe once more at the end of season 3, but with the world rewritten so that Umbrella Academy are stripped of their powers and their adoptive father Sir Reginald in control.
Meanwhile, the fate of The Sparrow Academy's Sloane Hargreeves (who also happens to be Luther's new wife) is up for debate.
There's also a post-credits scene, featuring Justin H Min’s Ben Hargreeves, as he appears to track down his birth parents - possibly indicating a future storyline for the fourth season.
Showrunner Blackman has said that he hopes to explore a new side to the characters following the removal of their powers at the end of season 3. "I want to pose to the viewer and the fan, ‘Would they be happier without their powers?’ I mean, all they do is complain about being who they are."
"So, will Viktor, will Diego be happy without it or will they feel like they’re missing an appendage? Will the world not be right for them anymore without powers? Can they be ‘normal’?"
The stars have also given their takes on season 4.
Raver-Lampman said: "[It’s] really, really packed with classic Umbrella Academy family nonsense and shenanigans that you look forward to."
She added: “There’s some unbelievable new characters and villains that are super exciting.”
Is there a trailer for The Umbrella Academy season 4?
Yes! A trailer for The Umbrella Academy has officially been released.
It starts dramatically (would we expect anything else?) with Elliot Page's Viktor informing Ben (Justin H Min) that he's on pace to end the world in 48 hours. Reginald Hargreeves (played by Colm Feore) helpfully chimes in with: "Twenty-four, actually." Fabulous!
To the soundtrack of My Chemical Romance's The End., it's revealed that Ben (who isn't the same Ben we know and love after the season 3 finale introduced The Sparrow Academy) is the key to understanding all of the different timelines in the show.
The siblings attempt to remember how Ben actually died – without much luck – as they join forces for one more world-ending adventure. Chills, literal chills!
You can watch it below:

Is The Umbrella Academy ending?
Yes. Showrunner Blackman has confirmed that the series is officially ending with season 4. We don't know how it'll all play out yet, but he previously spoke about how he'd like the show to end.
